Piedmont, VA, and vicinity. On June 5, 1864, Union forces under General Hunter marched southwest along the East Road (now Highway 608) where they met and defeated a Confederate force assembled at the crossroads of Piedmont. The Union forces, including the 116th Ohio (at the extreme left of the 1st Brigade; circled), attacked and were repulsed twice before a final assault, coordinated with a flanking movement by the 2nd Brigade, overwhelmed the defenders.
