The western approaches to Lynchburg, VA. The Union army attacked along the Lynchburg Pike (US 221/460) on June 17, 1864, assaulted the defensive lines (Fort Hill) on June 18, were repulsed and withdrew back to their original camp near Liberty (Bedford) that night.
