The Baltimore & Ohio Railway (B&O) from Parkersburg, WV to Martinsburg, Harpers Ferry and points east had been torn up by the Confederates at Cherry Run. The Union army returning from Kanawha by river and rail had to detrain at Cherry Run on July 11, 1864 and march via Hedgesville to Martinsburg, then on to Duffields Depot, between Shenandoah Junction and Skeetersville.
